Menswear trends: Checked trousers & how to wear them

I'm not sure if it's the surge of period dramas with men decked out in full blown checked suits but the checked formal trouser is having a bit of a reprisal this Autumn/Winter. From houndstooth, to herringbone to Prince of Wales I've put together a mini guide on how to wear the trend for those wanting to take the plunge.

1. Feeling brave? These Valentino tapered plaid trousers are for you (the plaid is from uniform worn by Scottish soldiers in the 18th Century) £395 available from Mr Porter

2. If you go for a bold check keep the rest of your outfit simple. This T-shirt is just the ticket. £16 from Topman

3. Smart and slimline, this Slim fit blazer can work for day and evening. £65 available from ASOS

4.  Made in England these new balance are sporty and smart. The classic navy and burgundy colour also means they'll work well with numerous outfits. £89.00 available from Soleheaven

1. With hues of green, orange and brown running through these houndstooth checked trousers they are the perfect check trousers for Autumn. Traditional but with a modern tailored fit. £195 available from Hackett

2. Orange is a big colour this season, try this super cosy roll neck from William Fox & Sons, woven in Scotland it is 100% wool (so you may need to wear a long sleeve t-shirt underneath to avoid scratchiness) £215 available from Present London.

3. Ok I know it's a bit of a clashy print but you can definitely get away with it in this instance, this is a pretty cool rucksack! A master-piece x Be@r Brick collaboration £167 available from Oki Ni

4. Finish the rugged look with an equally pair of rugged boots. The Bedale Brogue by Loake shoes will do just the trick. £220 available from Joseph Turner

1. The super classic Prince of Wales check with a added point of freshness in the form on the blue stripe. £180 available from Jaeger

2. You can't go wrong with a classic button down Oxford, I really like the unique full length placket down the back of this from Band of outsiders, subtle yet fun! £155 available from End Clothing

3. Made in England this belt has received the royal treatment with it's creation: Leather, oak-tanned for 18 months, fitted with a brass buckle from the same factory they make bentley badges then had waxed and stitched. Safe to say this belt will last a very very long time with that type of craftsmanship. Tender S-Buckle Oak Bark Leather belt £165 available from Super Denim

4. Clark Kent esque, explore your inner geek with these snazzy frames. A creation from a collaboration between The Real McCoys and Effector Eyewear. £395 available from Super Denim

5. Weekend away in your new check trousers? You'll need this A.P.C Army duffel bag then. £250 available from Oi Polloi
